The manufacture and import of 100 watt incandescent light bulbs is now illegal, following a European Union ban which came into force on 1st September 2009. The EU ban is designed to promote the use of compact fluorescent lamps (also known as low energy light bulbs). The ban will be extended to all incandescent bulbs by 2012. All non-clear incandescent light bulbs will also be phased out so it will no longer be possible to buy any frosted or coloured light bulbs
The Energy Saving Trust estimates that using low energy light bulbs could cut the average household electricity bill by £37 per annum.
